Rocky Landscape with Livestock
(Arnhem 1615 – The Hague 1669)
Oil on Canvas. 63,5 cm. x 95,7 cm. 1660 ca
This art piece is a typical theme within Haagen’s portfolio; it portrays a rocky spot filled with trees in green and brown colors. It is very probable that Adriaen van de Velde did the figures in this piece.
Dutch artist who specialized in landscapes and developed his entire artistic career in the city of The Hague, where he was successful and renowned. His artworks that feature rocky landscapes usually have large-scale prairies that play an abrupt role in the composition and are filled with trees that give great deepness to the painting. Van der Haagen repeated the same scheme by adding paths around the river’s shore and small cabins, that created spaces filled with life while following the pure and typical style of Dutch landscape artists of the time. His works show attention to detail and are very premeditated; at times they might remind the viewer to other works created by the “Ruisdael Group”, especially those by Lagoor and A. Verboom. The predominant color tones are strong and dark, conveying a marvelous chiaroscuro effect. Within Dutch XVII century landscapes, it was common to see collaboration with another artist that made the figures of the work. In Haagen’s case, his Italianizing landscapes were done in collaboration with other prestigious artists such as N. Berchem or Adriaen van de Velde. It is also known that his friend D. Wyntrack painted the birds, ducks, and farms of Haagen’s most prominent works.
