LAMBERT DE HONDT
(Malines? 1620ca. – after 1665)

61,5 x 77,8 cm. (24,21 x 30,62 in.) Work signed apocrypically Teniers. 1645-50 ca.

The composition used for our painting is the same that of a work by Teniers dated 1642 whose reproduction appears in the Witt Library in London.

Flemish painter of which little is known of his life, only that his activity was carried out in Malines. He painted landscapes full of trees in green and gray tones, with shepherds and cattle, always animated with some scene of knights fighting mounted on horse. In his works, the influence of D. Teniers is evident, of which Honet surely was his disciple and whom he greatly admired, proof of this is the appearance of his name in many of his works. The landscapes with knights are reminiscent of P. Snayders and P. Meulener, and in them the composition, made through groups of people, makes clear his mastery as a painter. It is also important to note its great capacity to capture the personality of the people portrayed on the canvas. His works are usually part of all catalogs specialized in painting of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. He always signs as D. Hondt.
