(Valencia, Spain 1985)
42 x 32 cm. (16,53 x 12,59 in.) PVC and acrylic paint. 2021
Jacobo Eid was born in Valencia on August 25, 1985. Dinosaurs and goblins were the protagonists of the oil paintings he did when he was 5 years old, on canvases larger than him. The models, the clay, the construction toys, the ceramic figures to paint and the plasticine, their field of play.
He studied Industrial Engineering, complements his knowledge with the Master of Product Design for Innovation in Milano, and finished it off with a degree in Fine Arts. The multidisciplinary nature of his learning, together with a long professional career in the automotive industry, allows him to create concepts and develop production techniques that are out of
the standard.
His activity as a plastic artist began on a trip to London in 2008, when he was impressed with the artistic atmosphere of the city. As a result, he created a series of sculptures that fascinated Tomas March, an important gallery owner of contemporary art. In 2017 he takes up artistic production again, giving caricatures to his co-workers during the working day, generating surreal situations. That same year he begins to investigate his works of cast dolls and makes his first mural on his birthday, where he invites his friends to a secret plan that consists of painting a 2×6 meter wall, using templates and spray cans. After that first experience he made murals and installations in the street, receiving his first professional commissions. Work with toys that all generations have enjoyed, thus connecting children, young and adults. He transforms the material with industrial processes that he learned working in factories. Heat, time and pressure are the ingredients that, together with the balls and dolls, generate the base of the work. Which is topped with acrylic paint, glitter and gloss varnish. His material research focuses on sustainability, studying how to use industrial waste for its introduction into everyday life. Processes that transcend the artistic fact and can be applied in other fields. He uses color as a vehicle towards childhood, reproducing the happy and calm tones found in games and toys.
At a time when we are bombarded with advertisements directed at the individual through social networks, where we are spied to encourage us to buy a product that we were simply looking at, where thousands of images a day are captured by our brain, generating the feeling of having
seen everything, Jacobo makes pieces that represent a haven of peace. On the one hand, it innovates, creating what has not been created, surprising the viewer by restoring the sensation of the experience lived for the first time. On the other, it introduces him to a game, inviting him to discover the figures with which he played and the interactions that occur between them, in a piece of art.
His works convey purity, innocence, vitality and energy. They manage to immerse you in the time when everything was laughter and love. With carefree flag, they remind you that happiness is hidden behind an ice cream, a day at the beach, making new friends and waking up every morning excited about living new adventures. They invite you to get excited about simple things. Paraphrasing Antoine de Saint-Exupéry in his work The Little Prince, “what is essential is invisible to the eye”.
Jacobo Eid has found happiness playing with the child he was, with his innocent and fresh look he invites us all to play with him.
